SARAH VAUGHAN: A SASSY CENTENNIAL

This celebration of the versatile and widely influential jazz singer Sarah Vaughan, whose nicknames included “Sassy” and the “Divine Sarah,” will find talented admirers performing her music in front of a full orchestra. “Among the singers of her generation, only Ella Fitzgerald enjoyed comparable stature,” The New York Times wrote of Vaughan, whose hits included “It’s Magic,” “What Lola Wants” and “Make Yourself Comfortable.”

Leading audiences in the celebration will be Grammy-winning vocalists Patti Austin (@pattiaustinofficial) and Lisa Fischer (@l.i.s.a.f.i.s.c.h.e.r), along with Grammy-winning trumpeter Randy Brecker (@randybrecker) and the winner of the 2023 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition, Tyreek McDole (@tyreek.mcdole), all accompanied by the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra.

Maurice “Mobetta” Brown ft. Tyreek McDole

Trumpet sensation Maurice “Mobetta” Brown deftly navigates the worlds of contemporary jazz, blues-rock and hip-hop. An accomplished trumpeter, composer, arranger and producer, he expertly blends be-bop, hip-hop and rock to create riveting musical journeys. A Chicago native, Brown won the Miles Davis Trumpet Competition as a teenager, studied under clarinetist Alvin Batiste in Louisiana and recorded his acclaimed debut HIP TO BOP in New Orleans. After moving to New York, he recorded with household names like Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean and The Roots. Maurice features Central Florida native and International award-winning vocalist, Tyreek McDole, on the set!

Burlington Discover Jazz Festival Residency

Again this year, the Vermont Comedy Club transforms into Big Joe’s every night of the festival, becoming an after-hours, old school jazz joint named in honor of “Big Joe” Burrell, one of Burlington’s cornerstone jazz musicians. As part of a continuing partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Tyreek McDole is playing a five-night residency. McDole plays with his impressive band of jazz musicians starting at 10 pm each night, then the stage is opens for jam sessions at midnight for any musicians who would like to come and play.

Tyreek McDole Quintet Bethany Jazz Vespers

For 150 years, The Bethany Baptist Church of Newark has been one of the leading African American houses of worship. The Church features monthly jazz in its Saturday evening Vesper services.

In May, Bethany Baptist welcomes jazz vocalist Tyreek McDole and his quintet. The rising star is fresh off his win at NJPAC’s 2023 Sassy Awards, only the second male singer in the contest’s history to take first place. DownBeat hails the 24-year-old as a “smooth singer with a mellow baritone … recall[ing] the romantic styles of Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstine.”
